Cities XL is made up of more than 15,500 files in more than 600 folders!
To find your way around and adopt a good way of working, here are our tips:
Unpack the whole game with Tools/Decompress all Cities XL.
If you have mods in the game's Paks folder, remove them temporarily. Indeed, Cities XL first reads all Pak files and then Patch files and this, in alphabetical order, possibly crushing previous versions of the files. (That's why Patch files are called starting with an M or an X, like xMod. We are sure that our changes will not be crushed by other files.)
When it's over, you get a data folder that contains the original tree and
files. Put this data folder in another folder that you'll call, for example, 'Original CXL Files'. Take it as a rule NEVER to tamper with the original files, keep them as a reference!
Use CXL Data Explorer to browse decompressed files.
This tool allows you to view all the text files and images contained in the data folder.
By adjusting your options correctly, you can set an external text and image
editor. So if you want to edit a file, a right click on it then Edit, and let's go!
Think about creating a work folder, and when your file is edited, save it in, remember never to crush the original
files. Be careful, it is not enough to save the file in your work file with the same name, you must also create all the directories and sub-repertory in order to get the original tree, starting with data... !
Advice for external publishers: I suggest a text editor: Notepad, and two graphic editors: Paint.net .
or
and its
All three are free, multilingual and perform very well.
Other functions
On the main screen you can compress a folder with one or more files in it that you have modified to create a mod (Patch file). You can also decompress a Pak or Patch file (for example to learn from a mod, by comparing with the original files,...)
Tools SGBIN Unpak and Repak will be explained in another
topic. They are mainly used to add textures, duplicate objects and change their properties,...
What now?
Above all: good luck and good luck!
You'll need some to learn how this whole pile of files
works! But hey, maybe the regulars of the modding will give you some advice, who knows ... In any case, do not hesitate to exchange your discoveries on the forum, because it is all together that we will live the Community Cities XL, and certainly not by jealously guarding its 'discoveries'...
One last word...
Don't forget that you don't have the right to harm the Cities XL licensee by unlocking certain content, be responsible!
